In the Theravāda tradition, Vesak — the full moon of the month of Vesākha, usually in May — remembers three great events: the Buddha’s birth at Lumbinī, his awakening at Bodh Gayā, and his final passing away (parinibbāna) at Kusinārā.
How Vesak is observed
- Visiting the temple, offering flowers, incense and lamps.
- Observing the eight precepts and spending the day in meditation and listening to Dhamma.
- In Sri Lanka, colourful lanterns (Vesak kūdu), illuminated pandals (thoran) and free food stalls (dansal) offered to everyone.
The true offering
Just before his passing, the Buddha said that the highest honour is not flowers or music, but practising the Dhamma — living with generosity, virtue and mindfulness. Vesak is a reminder to renew that practice.
