Way of Nirvana A Journey Towards Wisdom, Peace and Liberation

Vinaya Piṭaka — The Basket of Discipline

The Vinaya Piṭaka is the first of the three “baskets” of the Pali Canon. It sets out the training rules and way of life for monks (bhikkhus) and nuns (bhikkhunīs), and it tells the story behind each rule — usually a situation that led the Buddha to lay it down.

What it contains

  • Suttavibhaṅga — explanations of the rules of the Pāṭimokkha, the monastic code recited every fortnight. In the Theravāda tradition bhikkhus follow 227 rules.
  • Khandhaka (Mahāvagga and Cullavagga) — procedures for ordination, the rains retreat, robes, meetings of the Sangha, and important early history.
  • Parivāra — a summary and study guide to the rest of the Vinaya.

Why it matters to lay people

The Vinaya protects the Sangha so the Dhamma can be preserved from generation to generation. Its stories also give a vivid picture of daily life in the Buddha’s time, and many of its principles — honesty, simplicity, respect and harmony — are useful for anyone.
